"My name is Emilia Del Valle" by Isabel Allende
I liked that each chapter of this book contains a separate story. This is not a slow book despite it's brilliant pacing. There's a strong female lead. There's travel overseas, conflict, love, family and a voyage to find oneself. It definitely is magic realism. It's really well written and although my reaction after finishing the book isn't amazing, it's the kind of book which is memorable and that says a lot.
I gave it 3.5 stars out of 5.

I would recommend reading "The House of the Spirits" by the same author. As with most books, you have to understand the context for the author writing the book (geographical location, culture, time in which the book is set) and the style of book (magic realism). I think it really helped to hold these in mind during and after reading the book. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9328.The_House_of_the_Spirits
Hey Rosemary! Hope you’re doing well.
ReplyDeleteI’ve just finished a psychological horror short story called The Black Cup (about 7,600 words), where a man awakens at the same impossible banquet after every killing, and three cups await him.
I’m putting together a small ARC team before launch.
If you enjoy morally complex characters, psychological tension, symbolic storytelling, and stories that leave you thinking long after the final page, I think this might be up your alley.
I thought of you because you seem to enjoy psychological stories. If you’re interested, I’d love to send you a free advance ePUB copy in exchange for an honest review before release. No pressure at all if it’s not your thing!
