"Flashlight" by Susan Choi

I found this to be an intense read. It's initial appeal for me was the Asian setting. But it's actually set in a number of different locations including Korea, Japan and the USA. There are terrifying scenes and it covers a vast span of time. Each of the characters deals with their own trauma and challenges. The book tells the story of the four main characters from their position at that point in time. The chapters are long with long sentences which makes it feel like it is difficult to pause or breathe (and therefore this also applies to the whole book). There's a lot to process and it is not an easy read. It reads to me like a very honest, raw story about relationships and the ability to endure terrible circumstances while the life of others and broader life in general carries on as usual. I gave it 4 stars out of 5. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/219743621-flashlight
