"The Land in Winter" by Andrew Miller, shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2025
This is a beautifully written book capturing the real essence of humanity. Set in the countryside outside Bristol in the early 1960s, I found this book compelling and somehow hopeful in spite of the bleak weather; and at times, story.
The sense of the era was beautifully conveyed and the freedoms available to the different characters was evident. It helped that I read it whilst we had 10cm over snow outside.
I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.
Trigger warning: This book has scenes related to baby loss during pregnancy.
